The Year of Return
The Year of Return, Ghana 2019 is an initiative of the government of Ghana that is intended to encourage African diasporans to come to Africa to settle and invest in the continent
In September 2018, Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo declared 2019 as the Year of Return in order to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the arrival of African slaves in America.
He called on people of African descent (read African-Americans) to return to their home continent (read Ghana) in a “major landmark spiritual and birth-right journey”
Several activities were put in place to commemorate the return of the diasporans. They include
- Afro Nation
- Back To Our Roots Tour
- Detty Rave
- Decemba to Rememba
- Crusade 4
- Bliss on the hills

- The Waakye summit
- Afrochic Diaspora Festival
- Potomanto Festival
- Accra Under the Stars
- The Black Gala
- Gold Coast Experience
- Black Is Black
- Meet The Moon Girls
- Polo Beach Club
These activities entertained, educated and informed the diasporans about their roots and culture and the need for them to return to their roots and learn about themselves.
Several high profile people took part in the year of return including Boris Kodjoe, the mother of Beyonce, Ludacris, Steve Harvey and his family and to mention but a few.
